Black
Rock in Kaanapali - Photos
Black
Rock in Kaanapali is one of the best and most popular snorkeling
locations on the island of Maui. The water is calm, there
is good visibility, equipment rentals are nearby, and there
are many others also snorkeling to support and assist if you
become uncomfortable in the water. There is no lifeguard on
duty!

Black
Rock is inThe Kaaapali Beach Resort area about a mile north
of Lahaina Town and
is located oceanside of the Sheraton
Maui Resort & Spa. Black Rock is a beautiful snorkeling
location and the green Naupaka is growing wildly along the
shoreline.

It's
easy to see why this area is called "Black Rock"
as the lava formation to the right of the entrance to this
popular spot is black lava formed thousands of years ago.
Make sure to follow the instructions on the signs.

The
entrance to the snorkeling area is well-defined, and there
is normally a large group of people snorkeling at Black Rock.
Get comfortable with your mask and snorkel before entering
the water. Take your fins with you into the water and put
them on while floating and paddling out from the shoreline,
not while still on the beach. It's difficult to walk wearing
fins!

The
water at Black Rock is very clear early in the morning, and
you'll be able to see a wide variety of fish. Quite often,
a giant green sea turtle (Honu in the hawaiian language) will
be spotted along the coral reef. Be respectful of this incredible
creature and maintain a safe distance from it.

Both
locals and visitors like to jump off the top of Black Rock.
There are numerous "Off Limits" signs posted on
the black lava warning of the danger for those that would
like to try to jump off the top of Black Rock. It can be very
dangerous and should be avoided.

As
you look toward your left while facing the ocean, you can
see the resorts of Kaanapali Beach Resort.
