Iao
Valley - Iao Needle on West Maui
Iao
Valley State Park is a “must-see” location on
Maui. It is a picturesque 10-acre park that is famous for
a 2,250-foot peak called "Iao Needle" by the locals.
It's
located about four miles from the Maui community of Wailuku
and boasts some of the most beautiful scenery on the island.
Iao
Valley is known to Hawaiians as a place where a sense of mana
(supernatural or divine powers), exist and ancient Hawaiians
named this valley in honor of the god 'Io. The park hosts
a nature center and heritage garden -- the Kepaniwai Heritage
Gardens.
There
are also nice restroom facilities on the grounds. It's a popular
site for
visitors and tourists to Maui, and people come to stroll the
grounds and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Iao Valley State
Park is open from 7AM to 7PM and there is no entrance fee.
Iao
State Park was the site of hundreds of Hawaiian battles and
the bones of fallen warriors were scattered throughout the
area. One of Maui's most famous battles took place here, and
history books refer to this location as a major burial ground
for Hawaiian chiefs (Ali'i).
This
location was also known as an important political and social
center in ancient Hawaiian days.
Directions:
The town of Kahului and Wailuku are both on the northern side
of Maui and are near the major airport. Take Hana Highway
from Kahului. It turns into Hwy. 32 in Wailuku. Stay on Hwy.
32 and there will be a sign at the intersection with Honoapiilani
Road pointing you to drive straight ahead on Hwy. 32.
Iao
Valley State Park is located just over four miles from the
heart of Wailuku, the financial district for Maui that also
houses local and state government offices.
There
is ample parking at Iao Valley State Park. In additon, there
are comfortable, clean restroom facilities and trash containers.
The
park closes at 7 PM and cars are towed after the closing hour.
Plan on spending about three hours at the park!
