Papalaua Beach on West Maui

Papalaua Beach Park
Is A Calm, Relaxing Beach Along Hwy. 30

Papalaua Beach Park is a long beach, stretching for over a mile along Hwy. 30 on the west side of Maui.

Papalaua Beach Park is the first beach you will see after passing through the small tunnel, which is just after the whale overlook parking area from Maalaea Harbor.

The Beach Park is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day, and has port-a-potty facilities at several places along the roadway. There are trash containers and recycling bins available, and containers for your hot coals and ashes.

Several locations have picnic tables under large shade trees and they're on a first-come basis.

One thing you will quickly notice about Papalaua Beach Park is how close vehicles can park to the edge of the water. It allows beach-goers the opportunity to pack a lunch or dinner and bring beverage coolers, without having to carry them very far.

Vehicles can also pull into the beach park, but be careful not to get stuck in soft sand.

There is a reef system very close to the water's edge, which keeps waves from being strong in both the morning and afternoon hours at Papalaua Beach.

Snorkeling can be very good with excellent visibility and calm water, which is good if you are a beginning snorkeler and just getting comfortable in the ocean.

It's also a good location for first-time surfers, as the waves are not very big on this part of Maui.

There is an abundance of underwater sealife within 50-75 feet of the water's edge, and it's easy to float above the coral reefs.

If you're nervous about snorkeling for the first time (or any time), use a floatation device for additional safety and comfort.

Please do not stand on the coral reef! It is a breathing, living organism and many forms of life depend on its survival.

Suggestions:
* Plan ahead before you leave your residence, as there is not a store of any kind nearby.
* Take plenty of water for yourself and to rinse snorkel masks and other accessories.
* Don't drive into areas of the park where the sandy beach does not look firm and stable.
* Leave before it gets dark, as this part of the island has no street lamps.
Be respectful of others enjoying the park, and please dispose of your trash properly.
