Shipwreck
Beach
on
Lanai
This
is one of the most interesting beaches that you will visit.
It's on the island of Lana, a short ferry ride from Lahaina
Harbor in Lahaina Town on the west side of Maui.
The
best beach on the island of
Lanai is Hulopoe
Beach on the southeastern side of the island. In fact,
it's just a short walk from the harbor at Manele Bay.
Take
the ferry to Lanai from Maui. Photos

Green

The
giant green sea turtles
seen in water around Maui are one thing you might experience
while snorkeling at various locations. They are called Honu
in the Hawaiian language and are an endangered species.

Green
Turtles on Maui
Are An Endangered Species
Visitors
to Maui, Hawaii, come for the pristine beaches, beautiful
waterfalls, exquisite polynesian foods, and the Humpback Whales
during their half-year stay in Hawaiian waters.
But
people also come to snorkel in crystal-clear water and see
the Green Turtles.
Protected
by the Endangered Species Act, the Green Turtles can not be
harassed in any way or form, including touching, feeding,
or holding onto their shells. It's good to stay at least 20-25
feet away from Maui's Green Turtles, giving them plenty of
room to surface for deep
breaths.
Green
Turtles are named for the color of their skin. They can live
as long as 50 years, with some in Hawaiian waters over the
age of 70 years.
This
particular species of turtle eats mostly algae along rocky
shorlines, does not have teeth, and can weigh up to 350 or
more pounds with the female producing hundreds of eggs in
nesting areas along the Maui coastline.
Make
sure you see the Green Turtles while visiting Maui. Most of
the popular snorkeling
locations are sites where Green Turtles are often seen, and
Black Rock
at the Kaanapali Beach Resort area on west Maui is one of
the easiest locations to find Green Turtles.
Two
more good places to see Green Turtles while snorkeling is
at Kapalua Beach and
Napili Beach,
also on the west side of Maui. Both of these beaches have
good reef systems neary the shoreline, with clear water in
the early morning hours.
The
Maui Ocean Center also has Green Turtles in their natural
habitat. It's located at the Maalaea Harbor shops, which is
mid-way between the Lahaina
and west Maui side of the island, and the Kahului area which
hosts the airport.
Suggestions:
*
Make sure you have a good mask, snorkel and fins.
*
There are many places to rent equipment on Maui. You don't
have to bring your own!
*
Purchase a good anti-foggin solution for your snorkel mask.
*
Always snorkel with a buddy or around other people. Never
snorkel alone!
*
Put your fins on your feet in the water instead of on the
sandy beach. It is much easier.
*
While the water might feel cold at first, take a few minutes
to get acustomed to the water's temperature. You'll
warm up soon!
